‘Can’t get any worse’ – Gary Neville makes two Man United demands as Donnarumma talks begin

Gary Neville has demanded two more major signings from Manchester United this summer, highlighting one particular position as needing critical attention.

The Red Devils endured a miserable 2024/25 campaign, slipping to 15th in the Premier League table, while losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

As a result, there will be no European football at Old Trafford next season, while the club are performing major surgery to help Ruben Amorim ensure there is no repeat failure.

Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have already been brought in, but according to Neville, United need to go much further.

Gary Neville gives verdict on Man United transfers

The former United right-back and captain has urged his old club to make two more signings and believes a new goalkeeper is of particular importance.

“That could be a bigger challenge than the economy… I think the two signings are good signings, yet there’s a couple more needed,” pundit Neville told Sky [July 30].

“I think they need a goalkeeper, and if they fill those two positions with decent signings, then United can have a lot, I mean, they have to have a better season than last year. It can’t get any worse, really.”

Neville’s comments come after a season in which Andre Onana made five errors leading to goals in the Premier League and Europa League combined, leading many to question whether he’s the right man to don the gloves for United.

Aston Villa‘s Emi Martinez has been the goalkeeper most regularly linked with United this summer, and Amorim may have received a boost with Unai Emery’s side taking a close look at John Victor from Botafogo.

However, Martinez is by no means the only big-name goalkeeper linked with the Red Devils.

In fact, according to the Telegraph [July 30], United have renewed their interest in Paris Saint-Germain stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italy international has arguably experienced more success than any other goalkeeper over the past five years, winning Euro 2020 at national team level alongside a host of domestic honours and last season’s Champions League with PSG.

But Donnarumma — who has also been linked with Man City recently — now has just one year remaining on his contract in Paris, with PSG understood to be happy to let him go at the right price.

PSG are already making moves at goalkeeper themselves, signing Lucas Chevalier from Lille, while they’re bracing themselves for another approach from United for Donnarumma after an enquiry earlier in the summer.
