Jamie Carragher has revealed he was surprised when Liverpool signed Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle last summer.
The Anfield legend and Sky Sports pundit was perplexed as to why Jurgen Klopp had sanctioned the £25million purchase of Wijnaldum when Liverpool already had a surfeit of attacking midfielders.
Carragher made the point ahead of the Merseyside club’s 3-1 Premier League defeat against Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Monday night.
“I must admit, I don’t know why Liverpool signed Wijnaldum,” said the former defender on Sky Sports 1’s Monday Night Football programme. “I just didn’t know where he would fit in.”
But Carragher has been won over by the impact made by Wijnaldum, who has been regular for the Premier League top-four hopefuls in his debut season.
The Holland international has been used predominantly in a central midfield position and started 21 of the team’s 26 Premier League fixtures.
Wijnaldum has scored three goals and supplied six assists in all competitions, with all the goals coming in the league.
He played the full 90 minutes of the defeat against Leicester but was part of a below-par display by his team.
