Simon Mignolet and Alberto Moreno should be offloaded by Liverpool and replaced in the summer.
That is the verdict of Jamie Carragher, who claims they have consistently failed to produce the goods for Jurgen Klopp’s team.
The former Liverpool defender was very critical of the performances of Mignolet and Moreno in the team’s League Cup final defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
Mignolet made a number of fine saves but was badly at fault for Fernandinho’s goal, while Moreno – caught out in the build-up to that strike – was poor throughout and replaced during the second half.
Carragher believes the Spaniard should be immediately dropped in place of fit-again Jon Flanagan and then shipped out, along with Mignolet, at the end of the season.
“The left-back has to come out of the team,” Carragher told Sky Sports after the match. “This is not a one-off today in terms of the goal.
“[Jon] Flanagan has come back fit and has to go into the team in midweek, he [Klopp] has to change the left-back.
“Flanagan played left-back when they nearly won the league. He can’t be worse than him [Moreno].”
Carragher also identified Mignolet as a weak link for Liverpool.
“The goalkeeper has made some outstanding saves today, but just because you make some outstanding saves doesn’t mean you should be allowed to concede a goal like that. The mistake is shocking. You can’t score from there. And that is not just today.
“Going forward for Liverpool, those are two areas Jurgen Klopp has to change in the summer.
“The goalkeeper may have signed a five-year deal, and he has made some good saves today, but things have to change.”
Carragher is convinced the Europa League showdown between Liverpool and Manchester United has become even more significant now for the Reds, with Klopp aware of the size of the task he faces to drag the Anfield side even close to competing for major honours.
“Klopp will realise there is a lot of work to do in terms of turning it around,” the Sky pundit added. “To take City to penalties he should be proud of the players. They never left anything out on the pitch. In extra time they looked the team who were going to win.
“But there’s a big problem with where they are in terms of the Premier League What can they win?
“Liverpool are a big club and are nowhere near winning the Premier League. They are nowhere near winning the Champions League.
“Are Liverpool good enough to win the Europa League? Probably not. There are a lot of good teams left.
“Now the game against Manchester United in the Europa League, that’s the big game. The season is resting on it.
“It’s almost like a cup final now. There’s no doubt it’s been a disappointing season and there is lots for Klopp to do.”
