Carragher: Liverpool sent a strong message after Crystal Palace win
By Harvey Byrne
Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has claimed that the Reds sent a message following their emphatic victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The Reds battled to a 4-2 win at Selhurst Park at the weekend with goals from Emre Can, Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino cancelling out a James McArthur double.
It has seen the Merseysiders maintain their position as joint top of the league with Manchester City and Arsenal currently occupying the top two spots through goal difference.
Carragher believes that the win shown on BT Sport has now got people watching and thinking “these are the real deal,” comparing the current side to the Brendan Rodgers team which came so close in 2014.
“Against Crystal Palace, the defence was not great, but their intensity with the ball, and the way they closed people down….it’s reminiscent of a couple of years ago,” said Carragher on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“I go back to that season with Brendan Rodgers. Don’t forget that is what nearly took Liverpool to the title – that extra energy, intensity, closing people down, fast football.
“Alan Pardew and his players said it was the best team they’ve come up against this season. Some of the football was fantastic. Crystal Palace away, you’re not playing one of the big boys but you do think ‘we can easy drop points there’.
“So I think to go there and win so emphatically, I think probably sent a message. With it being on TV, with everyone watching I think they’ll be thinking ‘these are the real deal’.”
The Reds were just three points away from winning the Premier League title in 2014, which has become famed by opposition fans by a Steven Gerrard slip at home against Chelsea.
They are also yet to win the Premier League title with their last league win coming in 1990 in the old Division One, before the Premier League formation.
However, Jurgen Klopp has put the famous side in a fantastic position after 10 fixtures and he will be keen for his side to continue their run without the distraction of European football, similar to the 2013-14 season.
