Celtic and Rangers door could be about to open for sensational move to England – Keith Wyness

Former Aberdeen chief Keith Wyness has suggested Celtic and Rangers will keep a close eye on developments at Fenerbahce as they eye a sensational potential move into the English football pyramid.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the European giants exiting the Turkish Super Lig would set a “precedent” for Old Firm clubs to do something similar.

Fenerbahce decided on Tuesday (2 April) to remain in the Turkish top flight after considering withdrawing following an attack on their players during a game against Trabzonspor.

The matter is not fully resolved, however, with chairman Ali Koc claiming the matter will be revisited at the club’s general assembly this summer.

There has long been a debate about Old Firm clubs joining the English football pyramid – with multiple proposals being rejected both north and south of the border.

Fenerbahce fall-out could mean huge changes at Celtic and Rangers

Wyness suggested the Fenerbahce situation could open the door to Celtic and Rangers making the switch.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Celtic and Rangers will be keeping an eye on this crucial situation.

“This was always the big argument for the Super League, allowing clubs to move if they are unhappy with where they are.

“I can see Uefa’s point of view, they want to keep countries as sustainable groups.

“I think it gets out of hand if clubs can float around and become franchises like in the US. I don’t think it’s the right thing for the fans.

“But Fenerbahce, if they do eventually decide to exit the Turkish League, could set a precedent for clubs like Celtic and Rangers to move on.

“But as the rules stand right now, they won’t be coming to English football.”
