Celtic and Rangers face ‘big’ fines after confirmed news – Stefan Borson

Celtic and Rangers will soon be hit with “big” fines if their supporters continue setting off pyrotechnics inside stadiums.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the current threat of multi-year bans isn’t deterring fans from using flares.

Celtic, Rangers and Motherwell have all been charged by the SPFL over the use of pyrotechnics during the Scottish League Cup semi-finals at Hampden Park last month.

In 2023, specific law banning the use of pyrotechnics inside Scottish stadiums was introduced.

Celtic and Rangers face off for the second time in the 2024-25 campaign on Sunday (15 December) when the Old Firm rivals contest the Scottish League Cup final.

Philippe Clement’s side have already been fined twice by Uefa this season for their fans’ use of pyrotechnics on the road in the Europa League.

Celtic and Rangers fines to increase after latest charge

Borson revealed the fines are only going to increase for Scottish clubs if they don’t get on top of this issue.

He told Football Insider: “It’s seen as really serious, not just in terms of the club fines, but also if you look at supporter sanctions.

“If you are found to have launched a flare in a ground, you can get a very substantial ban, even outside of the court process.

“The police can prosecute, but then on top of that, the clubs have their own internal processes. The clubs can give you a multi-year ban for a flare.

“There must be a fear they can be extremely dangerous if they hit somebody and cause very serious injury and, therefore, they need to try and stamp that out.

“The fines will get bigger and bigger because they are a big issue.

“Even these threats of multi-year stadium bans are not really working.

“They will just keep increasing the fines and the clubs will have to do something about it because, ultimately, the fines will start to become quite material.”
