Celtic and Rangers saluted as Ally McCoist can't believe unexpected reveal - pundit

Gabby Agbonlahor has heaped praise on Celtic and Rangers for the atmosphere and spirit of this season’s Old Firm games.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed both clubs deserve credit as last weekend’s (1 May) 1-1 draw had no “dirty challenges” or “crazy tackles”.

Referee John Beaton dished out seven yellow cards at Parkhead but no red cards which means there has not been a single sending off in five games between the two sides this season.

Ally McCoist admitted while commentating on the game for Sky Sports, as relayed by footballscotland, that he could not quite believe there had not been a red card shown in Old Firm games this term.

“What I liked about watching the game was that there were no dirty challenges, there was no feistiness really in the game,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“After the game, everyone was shaking hands. That doesn’t really happen in Old Firm games, with everyone shaking hands and smiling.

“It shows that there can be a big rivalry but once the 90 minutes is over you can shake hands which was good to see.

“There was no bad challenges and maybe that was because Scott Brown and Alfredo Morelos were not there.

“Maybe the crazy tackles and the beef between both teams have settled down a little bit.”

Callum McGregor was sent off in Rangers’ 4-1 win over Celtic in the final Old Firm game of the 2020-21 campaign.

Sunday’s result left the Hoops six points clear of the Scottish Premiership table with three games to go and all but secured the title.

In other news, Celtic could have an advantage over Rangers in the transfer market after a ‘big’ BBC update.
