Celtic approach to sign Callum Wilson is a no-brainer after West Ham latest

Celtic should be prioritising a move to sign West Ham striker Callum Wilson as he prepares to leave the London Stadium when his contract expires next month.

Wilson was unable to help West Ham stay in the Premier League despite some strong showings under Nuno Espirito Santo over the last few months.

The 34-year-old was close to leaving the London Stadium in January as Celtic were among the clubs exploring a move, but instead decided to see out his contract.

He is now reportedly set to depart this summer after relegation was confirmed last week, and the Hoops should be in for his services again ahead of next season.

Celtic’s transfer plans are set to revolve around bolstering their attacking depth, with Wilson able to provide a quality alternative on a free transfer this summer.

Callum Wilson would be a shrewd addition to Celtic’s forward line

Wilson has been a regular scorer in the Premier League for several years, and still netted seven times in 32 appearances this season despite relegation.

He ended the campaign highly ranked among PL strikers for goals and expected goals per 90 minutes, as well as for successful dribbles, touches in the opposition’s box, and possession won in the final third per 90 minutes too.

According to talkSPORT, Wilson is now set to leave West Ham on a free transfer despite previous reports claiming that he was set to sign a new one-year contract extension.

He still seems fit enough to compete at a high level, even at 34-years-old, and it would make a lot of sense for Celtic to revisit their previous interest in his services this summer.

The Hoops only have three senior strikers under contract for next term, in Callum Osmand, Shin Yamada and Johnny Kenny, and so are clearly in need of some new additions up front this summer.

Former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill called Wilson a “very fine” player when they were linked in January, and they should definitely trust his judgement above anyone else’s right now.

What has Wilson said on social media since West Ham’s relegation?

Sources have revealed to Football Insider that West Ham are facing a 10-man exodus this summer, with Wilson now expected to be a part of that group leaving the club.

The ex-England forward took to Instagram earlier this week to hint at leaving the club, as he said: “I’m sad and extremely disappointed that it has ended this way. This club deserves so much better because there are so many unbelievable people behind the scenes that you fans don’t always get to see.

“For now, all I can say is thank you. Thank you to everyone who supported us. Your passion is amazing, and I truly hope you return to the Premier League, where you belong, as soon as possible.”

Reports have now confirmed that he is on his way out, and Celtic must be alert to his availability as the path clears to make him theirs for next season.
