Celtic backed to accept Daizen Maeda offer after latest – ‘he’s away,’ says expert
Frank McAvennie “wouldn’t be surprised” if Daizen Maeda quits Celtic for Southampton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Ange Postecoglou won’t “stand in the way” of Maeda if he wants to move to the Premier League.
According to footballscotland (6 January), Southampton were watching the 25-year-old in the Celts’ 2-0 League Cup semi-final victory over Kilmarnock on Saturday (14 January).
Maeda scored the opening goal and helped secure a place in the final.
The attacker is believed to be high on the list for Nathan Jones’ side after his impressive performances at the World Cup in Qatar as well as his consistently strong domestic performances.
The Japan international’s Parkhead contract runs until 2026 after signing a permanent deal in the summer.
McAvennie is glad to see the interest in the attacker.
“I think it is great that Premier League clubs are showing an interest in him,” he told Football Insider.
“He is missing some chances but you can’t argue with his talent. You can’t argue with his enthusiasm or his movement and work rate for the team. That all blends well for the Premier League because that is what they do.
“He works his socks off but he misses too many chances and then he scores absolute blinders. Southampton like players like that.

“I would not be surprised and there is no way Ange will stand in his way if it is the Premier League.
“I do not think there will be a problem but I do not think Ange will want to sell anyone but if the price is right then he is away.”
