Celtic backed to complete ‘brilliant’ Kasper Schmeichel signing – expert
Celtic have been backed to complete the signing of Kasper Schmeichel on a free transfer this summer after he left Anderlecht.
The goalkeeper is now available on a free transfer after leaving the Belgian club upon the expiry of his contract last month.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Celtic icon Frank McAvennie insisted supporters at Parkhead “would love” to see the 37-year-old brought in, insisting he is still “brilliant” despite his age.
Celtic have been searching for a new shot-stopper since Joe Hart retired at the end of last season, with Schmeichel the latest name on their list of targets.
However, McAvennie raised questions about the goalkeeper’s ambition and determination at this stage of his career, suggesting he may be looking for a late payday.

Schmeichel is still playing regular international football and was a key part of the Demark squad who were eventually eliminated from Euro 2024 by hosts Germany.
McAvennie insisted that if he still has the attitude and desire to perform at the top level, spending two years at Celtic could be the right move for all parties.
“Kasper is a good keeper, he’s been brilliant, but has he still got ambition or does he just want a payday?” he asked Football Insider.
“He might get a year or two because there’s no doubting his ability, but has he still got it in him? Has he still got that hunger?
“If he comes up here, the fans will love him.
“It’s just like they did with Joe [Hart]. He knew about the Celtic support, but he didn’t realise how good they were.
“If he comes up here, he will be loved.

“As long as he makes a few saves, I’d be happy with it. If he can still play, and he’s still got that hunger, I wouldn’t be bothered by how old he is.
“It’s only a number. If he’s still got that desire to play, Celtic can get a couple of years out of him.“
