RB Leipzig sporting coordinator Frank Aehlig has confirmed that Celtic beat multiple Bundesliga clubs to the £1millon signing of Marvin Compper during the January transfer window.
Compper, 32, agreed to join the Hoops in December 2017 before making his move official when the transfer window opened at the start of this year, but the centre-back’s switch to Parkhead has not gone as planned so far with just one appearance for the Scottish champions.
Injury has scuppered his start to life in Glasgow, but the one-time Germany international made his debut earlier this month in the Scottish Cup win against Morton.
Now, Aehling has confirmed that there were top-flight clubs interested in signing Compper before he decided to move to Celtic.
“He could have stayed in the Bundesliga, a few clubs were keen on him. It isn’t always easy to find the qualities you need in a defender but Marvin has them all,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
Football Insider verdict
Compper may prove to be a flop at Celtic Park. For £1million, Brendan Rodgers signed a player with known injury problems and also one who he may only get a season and a half out of. In all honesty, the Bhoys should have just kept hold of Erik Sviatchenko even with his own injury difficulties. Compper has been unlucky though. The German would have been hoping he could stay clear of injury but was dealt with a cruel blow just weeks after moving to Scotland. He may have a role to play in the coming weeks though with Jozo Simunovic suspended and Dedryck Boyata’s form being so poor.
