Celtic board could be ‘going behind Brendan Rodgers’ back’ to sign players, they’ve done it before

Brendan Rodgers’ relationship with the hierarchy at Celtic is far from perfect and now the board could be going behind his back.

Rodgers was unhappy with the lack of financial backing he received during the summer transfer window.

Fast forward to now, and Celtic are on a poor run of form in the Scottish Premiership, currently sitting five points adrift of league leaders Hearts.

The Hoops have won just one of their last five games in all competitions, and fan discontent is growing with every bad result.

Brendan Rodgers in the dark about Celtic transfer business

Over the past week, it has been reported that Bobby Clark would be joining Celtic from Liverpool in the January transfer window.

The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Derby County, and Rodgers revealed that he knew nothing about his potential move to the Hoops.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Clark could still complete a switch to Celtic, despite the Northern Irishman shutting down the rumours.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the club’s hierarchy could be going behind Rodgers’ back, as they have done before.

Wyness added that the former Leicester City and Liverpool manager may not even be at Celtic in January.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Look, Bobby Clark. Now, this is interesting. Brendan has come out saying he doesn’t know where that’s come from, doesn’t believe in the story, and he’s amazed that a story like that for January is coming out in October.

So Brendan’s saying no, but then again, will Brendan even still be there in January. There’s been a lot of talk, and Brendan does not seem to be following the party line. He is almost doing a Jose Mourinho in terms of saying to the board, I dare you to sack me.

So Brendan saying no to Bobby Clark doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not gonna happen because maybe the club are actually doing things behind Brendan’s back at the moment. It wouldn’t surprise me. And that’s been done before.”

Brendan Rodgers could quit Celtic

Due to the current tensions, Rodgers could leave Celtic mid-season if a Premier League job becomes available.

There is now a belief that the boss could be tempted to walk away from Parkhead before his deal expires, should an English club come forward with a strong offer.

Rodgers’ current contract runs out at the end of the season, but there is doubt over his future with the Glasgow giants.
