Celtic board have been ‘disgraceful’ to Brendan Rodgers after ‘guarantee’ backtrack – expert
Celtic have been “disgraceful” to Brendan Rodgers for failing to back him with quality signings since his return.
Speaking to the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie revealed that the board had “guaranteed” Rodgers that they would spend money on impactful recruits, not more “projects”.
The Hoops transfer activity since Rodgers’ return to the Glasgow giants has been underwhelming, with the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Gustaf Lagerbielke failing to impress at Parkhead.
As revealed by Football Insider last month (20 February), Rodgers is unhappy with the transfer business at the club over the last two windows.
Brendan Rodgers has been mistreated by the Celtic board
The Hoops’ biggest investment since Rodgers’ return has been on centre-back Maik Nawrocki, who joined for a reported £4million in the summer.
McAvennie, who is well-placed with the goings-on at Celtic, claimed that Kuhn’s move to the club was spearheaded by ex-recruitment chief Mark Lawwell – not Rodgers.
“Rodgers is one of the top coaches around,” he told the Insider Track Podcast.
“He wouldn’t have come back without a guarantee they’d spend money.
“Every signing that’s come in has been a project.
“I love the club and I like the board, but what they’ve done to Brendan is nothing short of disgraceful.
“Peter Lawwell came out and said they’ve tried to sign players, but who have they signed?
“I can’t see Brendan buying Nicolas Kuhn, that would have been Mark Lawwell.”

Celtic remain second in the Scottish top flight after their 2-0 defeat against Hearts on Sunday (3 March), but are still just two points behind Rangers after their loss to Motherwell on Saturday (2 March).
They are next in action against Livingston in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals on Sunday (10 March).
