Campbell: Wilder would be superb hire as 47-yr-old ‘honoured’ by Celtic link in latest twist

Chris Wilder would bring a modern style of football and good financial management to Celtic – he deserves his place among the frontrunners.

That is according to former Premier League goalscorer Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Red Bull Salzburg coach Jesse March told BBC Sport it was “an honour” to be linked with the vacant position.

The 47-year-old American coach joins Wilder among the favourites to be appointed Neil Lennon’s permanent successor.

Wilder was dismissed by Sheffield United on Friday after five seasons with the club, instantly becoming the bookmakers’ favourite to land the job.

Campbell praised Wilder’s forward-thinking football and ability to work within financial constraints, claiming he would be a hit with Celtic fans as a result.

“I do think he’d be a good appointment,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“If they were to pull the trigger then they’d have a manager who knows how to work to a budget and get the players onside.

“He plays an expansive brand of football with the centre-halves joining in with attacks etc.

“I think that’s something Celtic fans could get behind.”

Ex-Manchester United captain and 10-time Celtic man Roy Keane is also being touted as a possible appointment.

His hopes may have been given a boost after Football Insider revealed his old associate Martin O’Neill will be consulted by the club in the hiring process.

In other news, a top pundit and ex-Celtic manager has admitted he is baffled by David Turnbull’s admission from Steve Clarke’s latest Scotland squad.
