Celtic could get 'hurt' after Ange Postecoglou quotes emerge - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Celtic have to learn from their mistakes against Real Madrid when they take on Shakhtar Donetsk.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United and Aberdeen striker said Champions League teams “will hurt you” if you do not take your chances.

The Hoops impressed for the first hour against Real Madrid last Tuesday (6 September).

As revealed by Opta Analyst (6 September), Celtic had an xG of 1.0 compared to Real Madrid’s 1.7 over the course of the 90 minutes.

Speaking to BT Sport (6 September), Ange Postecoglou lamented his side’s inability to take good opportunities in the game.

When asked by Football Insider if an improvement was needed in the finishing department, Whelan said: “Absolutely.

“For 60 minutes it was a fantastic performance from Celtic against the European champions. They created chances and could have easily been one or two-nil up at one stage.

“These are defining moments in big games and big tournaments. You have to take these chances to give you a stronghold in the game and something to defend.

“There is no doubt that they will have learnt from that. Postecoglou will have told them that they have to be better in front of goal.

“They are playing against the best teams in Europe. If you don’t take your chances teams will hurt you.

“We know they can compete because they showed it for an hour against the best team in Europe. They will not fear Shakhtar Donetsk.

“If they can take their chance they know they will get something out of the game. They have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.”
