Celtic expert: Alistair Johnston told to ‘get better’ after confirmed news

Frank McAvennie has told Alistair Johnston he will “need to get better” when he starts playing for Celtic.

But, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said he is excited by any player Ange Postecoglou chooses to sign.

On Saturday (3 December), the Celts confirmed the signing of the 24-year-old from CF Montreal.

The right-back put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Parkhead club.

On 30 November, sources told this site that the Green and Whites are confident of agreeing a £5million-plus January deal for first choice right-back Josip Juranovic.

The 27-year-old’s contract runs until 2026 but has rejected a new deal and is willing to listen to offers from elite clubs.

The pair faced off against one another in Canada’s World Cup game against Croatia last week (27 November), before Johnston’s move was confirmed.

The Croatians came from behind to knock Canada out of the competition with a 4-1 victory.

After watching Johnston’s performances at the World Cup, McAvennie suggested the defender still has some work to do.

He will need to get better because Canada got absolutely battered down that side,” he told Football Insider.

He is a decent player, he did very well especially when they were on the attack in the first game. He just went for it.

That is where he was different class and that is the kind of game Celtic play.

I am looking forward to anyone who comes in because Ange has the Midas touch.
