Celtic expert appalled by ‘terrible’ SFA after what he saw in person – ‘it’s a disgrace’

Celtic idol Frank McAvennie has slammed the SFA for the use of VAR in the Scottish Cup.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said it is a “disgrace” that VAR was used in some games and not others in the fourth round of the cup competition.

The technology was in use for the Celts’ 5-0 victory over Greenock Morton at Parkhead last weekend (21 January) and was used to award a controversial penalty against the visitors.

As relayed by The Herald (23 January), of the 16 cup ties that took place last weekend, only three of them made use of the technology whilst the other 13 did not.

In the German equivalent of the competition, their FA opted not to use the technology until the quarter-final stage of the competition.

McAvennie was not impressed by the early introduction of the tech or what he saw from the officials.

It is embarrassing what they did,” he told Football Insider.

There was VAR in the game against Morton but they were not using it at the other games because the second and third division clubs do not have it.

How can you use it in some and not others? It is just not right. But that is the SFA.

Rangers

Someone told me the VAR was not coming in until the semi-final. It is absolutely terrible.

It is a disgrace and it spoiled the game. It was such blatantly bad refereeing it was terrible. I was shocked. We were all laughing in the stands.
