Celtic expert backs drastic rule change as Cameron Carter-Vickers footage re-analysed – ‘it’s creating havoc’

Frank McAvennie has backed a drastic rule change after Celtic were awarded a penalty against Ross County (2 April).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said ex-players need to be involved with VAR officials to help with dubious decisions.

As shown on Sky Sports (3 April), the Celts were awarded a penalty after Cameron Carter-Vickers’ header struck Alex Iacovitti’s arm inside Ross County’s penalty area.

The on field referee Willie Collum did not point to the spot but was instructed by the VAR official to take another look at the incident, after which he gave the penalty.

Jota converted the spot kick and a late goal from Alexandro Bernabei sealed a 2-0 victory for the Hoops.

McAvennie insisted ex-players should be consulted to prevent unfair penalties being awarded.

VAR is just creating havoc for everyone, it really is embarrassing,” he told Football Insider.

People say it is an unnatural position, it is not unnatural when you are jumping for the ball. It is unnatural to a referee who has never done that in his life.

You can’t jump with your hands at your side it is just impossible.

I do not know why they do not speak to ex-players. Nobody would have complained if that had played on. I do not know why they are not including ex-players. There are people who love the game who could help with these decisions.
