Celtic expert: Brendan Rodgers has ‘big problem’ with Greg Taylor

Brendan Rodgers has a “big problem” with Greg Taylor at Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie said Taylor seems to be struggling to adapt to a more defensive role under the new manager.

The 25-year-old massively improved last season under Ange Postecoglou, particularly following the arrival of fellow left-back Alexandro Bernabei and became an undroppable member of the Australian’s squad.

But the defender failed to hit the ground running again and has struggled so far this season.

The Scottish champions were linked with a move for a left-back this summer but after an injury to Cameron Carter-Vickers, losing Carl Starfelt and then losing his replacement Maik Nawrocki to injury, strengthening the centre of defence became a priority for the Hoops.

McAvennie suggested Taylor is still struggling to adapt to his new role under Brendan Rodgers.

The biggest problem with Greg Taylor is that he keeps running in to midfield,” he told Football Insider.

I do not know if that is Brendan’s style, I think it was Ange’s way I do not think Brendan wants to do the same.

I think he has got to curtail that because the manager will be wanting him to play on the outside rather than moving into midfield. He will have to defend more than he did under Ange.

Rodgers’ alternative to Taylor, Alexandro Bernabei, is under contract until 2027 after joining from Lanus last summer.

Bernabei has made just two appearances for the Scottish giants so far this term for a total of 31 minutes.
