Celtic expert cites Scott Brown in ‘unbelievable’ verdict after transfer update via Sky
Frank McAvennie has claimed it is “unbelievable” how many playmakers Ange Postecoglou has in his Celtic squad ahead of next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Hoops striker said there is a lack of holding midfielders at the club but suggested Aaron Mooy, 31, could fill in.
Speaking to Sky Sports (22 July), Postecoglou said the Scottish champions will continue to be active in the transfer window.
The manager added that he expects a “some comings and goings” over the next few weeks.
On Tuesday (19 July), Celtic confirmed the signing of Mooy from Shanghai Port.
The midfielder put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Postecoglou’s side.
McAvennie claimed that the Australian could replace Scott Brown in the holding midfield position, otherwise the Glasgow club are still missing his successor.
“From what I can gather Mooy is a playmaker,” he told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen.
“We’ve got [Reo] Hatate, [David] Turnbull, [Callum] McGregor, we’ve got umpteen playmakers. That’s not counting [Liel] Abada and [James] Forrest the wingers. It’s unbelievable the amount of midfield players we’ve got.
“If Mooy is not a centre-mid, as in holding, then we need one of them.

“Mooy will have all the time he wants in there, like Scott Brown did. It gives the others freedom to just go and play.
“I wanted a centre-half and I wanted a left-back, they’ve signed [Cameron[ Carter-Vickers and Jota so I’m happy. “
