Celtic expert hails ‘magnificent Parkhead’ and rips into ‘run-down Ibrox’

Celtic Park could host the Europa League final in 2026 or 2027.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie said that if Scotland are successful in their bid for the 2026 and 2027 finals Parkhead would be a better choice for a final than Hampden.

Uefa confirmed (18 July) that Scotland are one of a number of interested bidders in hosting the upcoming European finals.

They join Germany, Romania and Turkey in their bid to host the Europa League final and are also interested in hosting the Europa Conference League final alongside Germany and Turkey again, as well as Israel, Norway and Switzerland.

McAvennie insisted Celtic park would be the perfect venue if Scotland are successful in their efforts to host the final.

Hampden is not fit for purpose,” he told Football Insider.

You look at some of the beautiful stadiums around the world and Hampden is not up there.

We do it proud when we play the Scottish Cup final I just do not think Uefa would give it to Hampden.

It would be better at Celtic Park, that would be a magnificent choice because it is a Champions League Stadium. Ibrox is a bit run down now so I would not suggest that but if it were in Glasgow I would suggest Parkhead.

Celtic

There are a lot better stadiums out there than Hampden.”

The 2024 Europa League final is set to be played in the Dublin Arena in Ireland whilst the Conference League final will be hosted at the Agia Sofia Stadium in Greece.
