Celtic exploring bargain Jon McCracken deal as race heats up

Celtic are keen to explore the possibility of a move to sign Dundee FC goalkeeper Jon McCracken on a free transfer this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Bhoys are desperate to add further quality to their goalkeeping department ahead of next season, and it is understood that the 25-year-old is among a number of candidates that they are assessing at the moment.

Kasper Schmeichel is expected to leave at the end of the season, and sources say that at least one new goalkeeping addition will be made to provide competition for Viljami Sinisalo.

McCracken is out of contract at Dens Park at the end of the campaign, and could potentially be available without the need for a transfer fee.

Celtic’s transfer plans have seen a new shot-stopper fall at the forefront of their thinking for several weeks, and they may now be about to hone in on their man.

Celtic to face competition for Jon McCracken deal

Football Insider revealed back in March that McCracken is a target for English Championship clubs, with Sheffield Wednesday, Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers all keen to make a move for him.

The gloveman’s imminent availability has alerted several clubs south of the border to the prospect of a bargain deal, and a significant transfer race appears set to ensue as a result.

Celtic are now ready to join that race, after McCracken starred in their 2-1 victory over Dundee on Sunday afternoon.

He has kept five clean sheets from 32 Scottish Premiership games for the struggling side this season, but his individual stats are far more eye-catching.

McCracken boasts a higher save percentage in 2025-26 than both Schmeichel and Sinisalo, while he leads the entire league when it comes to saves per 90.

He looks set to have a wide array of options available to him if it comes to choosing his next club in the summer, but Celtic are now prepared to try and throw their hat in the ring for the Scot.

Viljami Sinisalo also in contention for number one spot

Football Insider also revealed in March that Sinisalo could be Celtic’s number one for next season, as there is a feeling within the club that he is doing “everything he can” to prove himself at the moment.

The Finnish star has kept two clean sheets in seven games since he came into the starting XI after Schmeichel’s injury, and he could force his way into a crucial role in next season’s plans.

Sinisalo could potentially force the Bhoys to recruit a backup ‘keeper as cover if he continues to impress between now and the end of the campaign, rather than aiming for an experienced head.

The uncertainty surrounding the managerial situation has put a huge question mark over large sections of their transfer plans for the summer windowl, but the clear priority of a new goalkeeper hasn’t changed.
