Celtic eye move for Belgian defender – report
By Russell Edge
Celtic are eyeing up a move for Club Brugge defender Bjorn Engels this summer, according to a report.
Belgian football news website Walfoot.be claim that the Hoops have been monitoring the 22-year-old’s position for some time, reporting that the centre-back is looking for a move from the Belgian side.
It states that he was exiled from manager Ivan Lenko’s Champions League squad as a result of his decision to leave, but while he has been re-included into the team, it is stated he still wants a transfer.
A shoulder injury kept Engels out of a large chunk of last season, as he managed to make 23 appearances across all competitions, including one during their Champions League campaign.
He has turned out 92 times in total for the club, scoring on 12 occasions, while he has also been called up for the senior Belgium side, although he has managed just one appearance on the bench.
Football Insider verdict
Celtic have a number of options at centre-back, but with Dedryck Boyata ruled out for a number of months with a serious injury, it poses a question as to who steps up to the plate. Brendan Rodgers will always be looking for ways to introduce experience into the squad, and a wantaway defender with Europa League and Champions League experience would seem like a great way to secure what he desires. At just 22-years-old, the Northern Irish manager will know Engels has his best years ahead of him, and that he could form a formidable partnership at the heart of defence with the likes of fellow 22-year-old Jozo Simunovic or 19-year-old
In other Celtic news, Zinedine Zidane has said that the club is perfect for this promising midfielder.
