Celtic face ‘nightmare’ scenario after ‘remarkable’ Rangers development – pundit

Celtic will face a “nightmare” if Rangers go on to win the league title and the Scottish Cup this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton claimed that the two remaining undecided competitions in Scottish football are the “biggest” and if either Old Firm side manages to clinch them both, they would have had the better season.

Philippe Clement’s side have already lifted the League Cup this term, but both clubs are still battling for the title and have Scottish Cup semi-finals later this month.

Before the Belgian’s arrival at Ibrox, many fans and pundits tipped Brendan Rodgers’ side to claim another domestic treble, but their neighbours’ “remarkable” resurgence has already scuppered that dream.

Celtic will have ‘better season’ than Rangers with domestic double

Hutton admitted that the remaining unwon trophies could “be anybody’s”, but suggested that Celtic failing to win a double would be disastrous.

“If Celtic win the league and the cup, then they would have had a better season than Rangers,” he told Football Insider.

“They’re the two biggest competitions out of the three – even if Rangers have had a good season.

“The turnaround that Rangers have had since Clement has come in has been remarkable, so if Celtic still go on and win the league, they will see that as a really good season.

“The flip side to that is that if Rangers do go on to win both, it would be a nightmare for Celtic.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers

“They’ve been so used to winning trophies every year, so it will be a difficult one to take.

“But there’s still a lot to play for and the trophies could still be anybody’s.”
