Sky Sports: Celtic tried eleventh hour swoop for Football League stalwart

Celtic enquired about signing Oxford United goalkeeper Simon Eastwood on transfer deadline day only to be told that the player wasn’t for sale, according to a report.
Sky Sports claim that the League One side didn’t want to sell any players in January, and also succeeded in fending off interest from Barnsley for the 28-year-old, who has been a stalwart in the starting XI with 36 appearances this season.
The Hoops were in desperate need to bring in a new goalkeeper before the transfer window closed, as regular number one Craig Gordon has been ruled out of action for three months with a knee injury.
The Bhoys ended up signing Dundee goalkeeper Scott Bain on loan until the end of the season.
Football Insider verdict
It is no secret the Bhoys were desperate to sign a goalkeeper in January, and Eastwood no doubt would have been one of many that they would have been keeping an eye on. The Oxford goalkeeper has kept nine clean sheets so far this season, and would have been a valuable addition to the squad. With Bain signed only until the end of the season Brendan Rodgers may well make another enquiry about the player, as both Craig Gordon and Dorus de Vries and now firmly in the veteran stage of their careers, whilst at only 28-years-old Eastwood could yet play for at least another 10 years. It could well be one to keep an eye on in the summer.
