Celtic fans all say the same about Kasper Schmeichel ‘retiring’ after what they spotted

Celtic fans are demanding that goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel retires following their late win against Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership.

First half goals from Tyreece John-Jules and Joe Hugill stunned Celtic, with Martin O’Neill making a triple change at the break.

O’Neill’s changes worked as the Hoops levelled the game up within 20 minutes of the restart thanks to goals from Sebastian Tounekti and Benjamin Nygren.

Celtic managed to find a winner and close the gap on league leaders Hearts courtesy of a 97th minute Julian Araujo goal, in what could prove to be two huge points gained at the end of the season.

Kasper Schmeichel ‘needs to pack it in’ after Kilmarnock win

Schmeichel joined Celtic in 2024 to replace Joe Hart, and the former Leicester City shot stopper enjoyed a successful first season in Glasgow.

However, amid Celtic’s struggles this campaign, the 39-year-old has been widely criticised by the fanbase for his performances in-between the sticks.

Many supporters blamed Schmeichel for Kilmarnock’s first goal, when a looping header evaded the stretching arm of the goalkeeper.

Number two goalkeeper Viljami Sinasalo has only been handed one Scottish Premiership start this season, and 24-year-old is still having to wait patiently for his opportunity.

One fan called the Danish international a “liability” with many calling for him to retire in order to ensure Celtic have a chance of winning the Scottish Premiership this season.

Shaun Maloney to play role in Celtic managerial appointment

Celtic will be on the lookout for a permanent manager when the season ends, and Shaun Maloney could be key to a high-profile appointment.

Maloney could tempt Roberto Martinez to take the Celtic job, with the 52-year-old currently in charge of the Portugal national team, and he is set to lead them at this summers World Cup.

Martinez managed Maloney as a player at Wigan Athletic, and the pair have worked together for the Belgian national side.

At this stage, the Hoops cannot guarantee any manager Champions League football next season, with even a title win not guaranteeing entry into the league phase.

The club will be desperate to qualify for the Champions League again, having missed out this season, and having had to settle for Europa League football instead.
