Celtic fans rage as footage of ‘disgusting’ controversy v St Mirren re-analysed

Celtic fans have been left fuming after St Mirren’s Shaun Rooney avoided a red card for an off-the-ball incident with Greg Taylor.

In footage shared by Sky Sports, the two players are involved in a battle for the ball before it runs loose, Taylor pushes Rooney, and then the St Mirren man kicks out at him.

However, the situation saw both players handed yellow cards and told to get on with it – leading to questions about the usage of VAR.

This is not the first time a questionable decision has failed to go in Celtic’s favour this season after an incident involving Kyogo Furuhashi went unpunished in the opening game.

Once again, a controversial refereeing call has grabbed the headlines away from what was an impressive 3-0 victory on the road from Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate and Alistair Johnston got on the scoresheet to secure a comfortable win for the Hoops.

Celtic fans stunned by VAR ‘corruption’ in 3-0 win v St Mirren

Despite the impressive victory, the focus once again has rested on a VAR decision which fans cannot wrap their heads around.

While the kick out wasn’t overly violent – as Chris Sutton pointed out on commentary – the usual response to an off-the-ball incident like this would be a straight red card.

However, Rooney escaped with just a yellow, while Taylor was also punished.

As a result, supporters have taken to social media to express their frustration at the latest call, as it was labelled “disgusting” and “corrupt”.
