Celtic have been dealt a blow with the news that defender Mikael Lustig will miss the Glasgow derby next Sunday due to suspension.

The full-back was supposed to serve his one-match ban against Dundee, but the game was postponed due to the ‘Beast from the east.’

And with no replay until April it means the next corresponding fixture is the derby.

But rather than bemoan the news of the loss of one of their usual starting XI, supporters of the Hoops are elated with the update .

The Swedish full-back has not been popular amongst the Celtic Park faithful over recent weeks due to poor form and many see his absence from the Rangers match as a blessing in disguise.

One fan made the comment, ‘The form he’s been in that’s not a bad thing,’ and another said ‘Lustig has been a good servant for the club in the past. However ,his recent performances especially against rangers at Celtic Park have shown that he can’t tackle, pass the ball or run. Now a liability.’

The match is a must-win game for both sides – for Rangers victory will cut the gap to three points and give them the confidence and momentum to go on, while for Celtic defeating their rivals will end any hopes of the Light Blues mounting an assault on the title.

Here is a selection of Twitter responses to the news on social media:
