'Hallelujah' - Celtic fans react to Sunday announcement

By James Black

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has been called up to Gordon Stachan’s Scotland squad after injury withdrawals – and Celtic fans think he should have been in the squad to begin with.

McGregor has been in great form for Celtic recently and scored a double in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Hibernian.

Most fans were surprised when McGregor was omitted from the original squad named to face Slovakia and Slovenia in Scotland’s final World Cup qualifying games.

Injuries to Scott Brown and Stuart Armstrong have forced Strachan’s hand and the Scottish FA finally confirmed this morning that he had been called up.

Scotland could still secure a play-off spot for for next summer’s World Cup and the addition of such an in-form player could enhance the Scot’s chances of making it to Russia.

The Scottish FA’s announcement that McGregor had been added to the squad was met with hordes of Celtic fans sarcastically applauding Strachan’s decision.

Here are some of their comments on Twitter:

The 24-year-old has scored six times in fifteen appearances so far this season for Celtic after an impressive start to the season.

Strachan has gained a reputation for sticking with players he has worked with before regardless of form and has been criticised previously for over-looking McGregor for his squad.

The national team are due to meet up today ahead of the double header and McGregor will be in good company with club mates Craig Gordon, James Forrest, Kieran Tierney and Leigh Griffiths all part of the squad.

Scotland face Slovakia at Hampden on Thursday and visit Slovenia on Sunday as they aim to qualify for their first major tournament in 20 years.
