Celtic fans react on Twitter as Old Firm derby referee appointed

By Matt Farr

Referee Steven McLean has been appointed to officiate Saturday’s Old Firm clash – and Celtic fans have reacted in humorous fashion.

According to the Daily Record, the Scottish FA have been impressed with McLean’s handling of big games, and are rewarding the 35-year-old with a chance to take charge of the biggest game in Scottish football.

This the first time that the up-and-coming referee will be officiating a meeting between the two sides, with Craig Thomson having refereed the last three Old Firm derbies.

Upon hearing of McLean’s appointment, Celtic fans took to social media to voice their opinions.

They responded in humorous fashion, with some claiming that McLean is a season-ticket holder at Ibrox. Others, meanwhile, were less than impressed.

Here are some of their messages on Twitter:

From 18 games this season, McLean has handed out 86 yellow cards and two reds, and will certainly have his patience tested at Ibrox on Saturday.

McLean has already taken charge of one Rangers game this month, dishing out nine yellow cards and two reds in their 2-1 victory over Aberdeen – Clint Hill and Ryan Jack the men dismissed.

He also took charge of Aberdeen’s clash with Celtic in October, and marked proceedings with five yellow cards.

In other Celtic news, goalkeeper Craig Gordon is confident he can continue as Celtic’s No.1 for the long-term.
