Celtic fans baffled as 27-year-old is excluded from squad v St Johnstone

By James Black

Celtic have named their team to face St. Johnstone in the Scottish Premirship – and fans have been left baffled by the complete exclusion of Leigh Griffiths from the matchday squad.

Brendan Rodgers has named an unchanged starting XI from the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, as confirmed by the Hoops’ official Twitter account prior to kick off on Saturday.

The 27-year-old striker started on the bench against Bayern Munich and replaced Stuart Armstrong with 11 minutes left but there has been no suggestion that he has since picked up an injury.

The former Hibs striker has already made 21 appearances this season – scoring eight times and setting up another eight for team-mates – after regularly starting in the absence of the injured Moussa Dembele.

With Griffiths not even in the 18-man matchday squad, fans have been left scratching their heads.

On-loan Paris Saint-Germain striker Odsonne Edouard has taken Griffiths’ place amongst the substitutes.

The Hoops can break a 100-year British record by avoiding defeat against Tommy Wright’s side today.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are level with Willie Maley’s Celtic side of a century ago who went 62 games unbeaten from 1915-1917.
