Celtic fans slaughter John Beaton as ‘unbelievable’ VAR footage emerges
Celtic fans were furious at referee John Beaton for his “shambolic” decision to award Rangers a penalty after Fabio Silva’s “dive”.
The Hoops and the Gers fought out an Old Firm classic at Ibrox in the 3-3 draw, with goals coming from Daizen Maeda, Matt O’Riley and Adam Idah for the visitors and James Tavernier, Adballah Sima and Rabbi Matondo for the home side.
However, perhaps the game’s biggest controversy came in the 55th minute when Alistair Johnston was penalised for making contact with the Wolves loanee as he was darting into the box and preparing to shoot.
With Celtic 2-0 up, Beaton initially gave Silva a yellow card for simulation, but after an extensive look at the VAR monitor, he changed his mind and gave Philippe Clement’s side the spot-kick.
Celtic fans brand referee John Beaton a “cheat” after VAR drama
While contact was certainly made on Silva, the forward looked to be on his way to the ground before Johnston’s touch – sparking outrage among Hoops supporters.
Tavernier smashed his strike into the top-left of the net to make it 2-1, giving goalkeeper Joe Hart no chance of stopping it.
Celtic fans have taken to social media to react to the “disgrace” of a decision, and they are adamant that Beaton is “corrupt”.
In other news, Celtic and Rangers door could be about to open for sensational move to England – Keith Wyness.
