Celtic fans troll Joey Barton on Twitter after Rangers message ahead of Old Firm clash

By Harvey Byrne

Celtic fans took the opportunity to troll former Rangers midfielder Joey Barton on Twitter on Sunday after he sent his support to his old club ahead of the Old Firm meeting.

The Hoops were held to a 1-1 draw by their fierce Glasgow rivals with a first half Stuart Armstrong effort being cancelled out by a late Clint Hill equaliser.

There was a lot of anticipation and build-up before two of Scotland’s biggest club’s met each other and one individual who got involved was Barton.

The outspoken 34-year-old certainly made no friends with the Hoops contingent during his time in Scotland and made several comments in the direction of Celtic’s way.

He continued to share that he was on the side of Rangers ahead of the match on Sunday and posted on his personal Twitter account his support for the Gers.

This naturally brought a hostile response from sections of the Celtic fan base on social media.

Large sections of the support made comments in relation to his recent betting charge, while others looked back at his last outing against Celtic, which ended in a 5-1 defeat for Rangers.

Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:

The aforementioned 5-1 defeat was Barton’s last game in a Rangers shirt with his contract terminated in November following a training ground bust up with Andy Halliday.

He has since made his return to Burnley in the Premier League, while the Hoops are on course for their sixth consecutive league title.

In other Celtic news, Derek Ferguson believes this 27-year-old can have no excuses for poor display on Sunday.
