Celtic continued to cling on in the Scottish Premiership title race as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s solitary goal was enough to defeat St Mirren 1-0 at Parkhead on Saturday. It backed up the narrow 2-1 victory over Dundee the week prior, and ensured the heat stayed on Hearts and Rangers ahead of the league’s split for the final five games of the campaign.

But it remains a perilous situation. Martin O’Neill will know that any more slips means it is surely curtains for their title hopes, and with a growing injury list to contend with, it is still an extremely tense situation at Parkhead. The good news is that star man Arne Engels returned against St Mirren, and that is a huge boost as the two teams gear up to go head-to-head again on 19 April in the Scottish Cup semi-finals at Hampden Park.

Celtic handed double home game boost vs title rivals

It was announced on Tuesday 7 April that Celtic will play both Rangers and Hearts at Celtic Park in the post-split Scottish Premiership fixtures. They’ll welcome Danny Rohl’s side to Glasgow’s East End on 10 May, before finishing the league campaign against Hearts at Parkhead on 16 May, in a game that could see the champions crowned. Of course, the Hoops are going into those games on the back foot, but O’Neill and his men are no doubt going to be boosted by the venues of those fixtures, and potentially the timing.
