Celtic: Financial figures showcase why the Hoops have lost Scottish Premiership hegemony

Celtic have once again been embarrassed after it was revealed that the club only spends 52 per cent of its revenue on wages.

This statistic is by far the lowest in the Scottish Premiership from the released figures for the 2024-25 campaign so far.

Much of this will be thanks to their income from European competitions, with the Champions League allowing the Hoops to bring in millions last term.

However, it has also exposed the board once again, as they continue to refuse to spend money.

Below, Football Insider has examined how damning this strategy has been, as Celtic’s title ambitions are under serious threat.

Celtic spent just 52% of its revenue on wages

On 26 March, Scotland’s Coefficient released a graph on X of how much the Scottish Premiership clubs were spending on wages compared to their revenue for the 2024-25 campaign.

Of the 11 accounts released so far, Celtic were bottom by a distance, with St Mirren and Dundee United next on the list at 60 per cent.

Key Celtic financial figures2024-25 campaign
Group revenue £143.6m
Gain on sale of player registrations£31.5m
Acquisition of player registrations£38.6m
Profit after tax£33.9m
Year-end cash£77.3m
Celtic brought in plenty of funds last season

In comparison, the Hoops’ title contenders for this season were clearly not afraid to splash the cash on wages, with Rangers at 61 per cent, and Heart of Midlothian being the highest on the list at 78 per cent alongside Motherwell.

This is simply laughable and showcases why Celtic have fallen off so badly this season.

Despite bringing in a huge sum of money last season, they have refused to invest it into quality new additions, whereas Hearts and Rangers have continued to build on their team.

Therefore, it is no wonder that not only have Celtic now lost their hegemony in Scotland, but they might not even win a trophy this season.

What are Celtic’s summer transfer window plans?

Unfortunately, things could get worse before they get better, with Football Insider exclusively revealing that Arne Engels and Reo Hatate could both depart in the summer.

The Hoops are bracing for offers for the duo, with both attracting interest from around Europe.

As a result, the summer transfer window could be a difficult time for the Old Firm club as they look likely to lose some of their best players.

It remains to be seen which European competition they will qualify for too, with this also likely to have a big bearing on their transfer activity.
