Celtic have landed ‘£45m’ windfall – Stefan Borson

Celtic have enjoyed a strong season after building up a significant lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership and performing well in the cup competitions.

Brendan Rodgers’s side have already claimed the Scottish League Cup trophy after beating Rangers on penalties in December.

The Scottish champions progressed through the revamped league phase of the Champions League after earning 12 points from their eight group games.

However, they were beaten 3-2 by Bayern Munich in the knockout round play-offs last month.

Football Insider revealed on 23 January Celtic landed a guaranteed £38million windfall from the Champions League prior to their clash against the six-time champions of Europe.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the Glasgow club likely banked closer to £45million in European prize money this season.

Meanwhile, the SPFL paid out just £33.7million to the 42 clubs in the Scottish pyramid last season.

SPFL face ‘big issue’ after Celtic windfall

Borson insisted the difference in prize money Celtic are generating presents a “big issue” for the Scottish Premiership.

He told Football Insider: “I think it would have been a bit more than £38million overall when you add all the different elements of the prize money, the TV money and the matchday.

I think you’ll find it’s probably closer to £45million.

“There are some costs associated with that. It’s not cheap to take your team to five away games and all that sort of stuff. These things do cost significant amounts of money.

“I did see a piece that just Arsenal’s warm winter break to Dubai apparently cost £1million. It just gives you a feel of how much it costs to take a squad of 25 players and the coaching stuff and everybody else on a trip of that nature.

“It won’t be as much for an away game, but it’ll still be a few hundred thousand pounds of cost for the hotel and flights.

“But Celtic are generating significant money from Europe. It’s a big issue for the Scottish Premiership and for balance in that league.”

Celtic have agreed record-breaking deal

Celtic have already lined up a new signing for the summer after Kieran Tierney has agreed a record-breaking deal ahead of his return to Parkhead.

Rodgers’s side extended their lead over Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 16 points following their 5-2 victory over St Mirren on Saturday (1 March).
