Celtic ‘have to get rid’ of Giorgos Giakoumakis this month – expert

Frank McAvennie has suggested Celtic “have to get rid” of Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Giakoumakis does not bring as much to the team as Kyogo Furuhashi.

According to Danish outlet BT (4 January), FC Midtjylland are interested in the 28-year-old.

The Danes are looking for a replacement for striker Evander who left last month and believe Giakoumakis could be the perfect option.

The report acknowledges that it would be an “expensive” move for Midtjlland whose previous transfer record stands at £4.5million.

According to the Sun (13 December), the Green and Whites could look for a fee in the region of at least £6m to let him leave.

The Greece international’s current contract runs until 2026 but Parkhead bosses have failed in attempts to secure the goalscorer to a new long-term deal.

McAvennie suggested that the Danish outfit would be a step down but he would be guaranteed the game time that he is looking for.

I think Ange is bringing in a striker, so he is going to be further down the pecking order,” he told Football Insider.

Celtic

He is a good player, he fights for everything. But when he is not scoring goals he does not do a lot for the team whereas the movement up front of Kyogo is something you can’t ignore.

If it was between the two of them then you have got to get rid of Giakoumakis. If he went to Midtyjlland it is a step down definitely, but he will get a game every week and he would be the top man there.
