Celtic hit by ‘bad news’ after Kieran Maguire’s near-£40m reveal – pundit

Celtic may be forced to “wheel-and-deal” in the January transfer window after their early exit from the Europa League.

That is the view of ex-Aston Villa and England attacker Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Kieran Maguire detailed the cost of their premature Europa League exit.

The football finance guru told Football Insider last week (26 November) Celtic have lost out on approximately £38million after their 3-2 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen the day before.

Lost prize money, gate receipts and broadcast income mean the club have missed out on almost £40million.

Ange Postecoglou admitted to club media after the defeat to Leverkusen his side were “not at this level yet”.

Asked whether it could have a negative impact on the club’s January window, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It could do.

“Celtic are in an OK position but any money lost is bad news.

“I’m sure Celtic can wheel-and-deal and bring in a couple of players and maybe get rid of a couple of players who are not in the manager’s plans to get rid of some money.

“The league is a lot closer this year so maybe Celtic are happy with the squad they’ve got. It’s definitely going to be an interesting title race.”

Celtic

Celtic are only four points behind Glasgow rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership after 14 games.

The two sides meet at Parkhead at the beginning of January but the Hoops have seven league games before then.

In other news, a Celtic coach has made up his mind on an offer to become an English club’s manager.
