Celtic idol has surprising take on Alfredo Morelos controversy as Rangers footage re-analysed

Frank McAvennie has suggested Alfredo Morelos’ goal for Rangers against Celtic last weekend (8 April) should have stood.

But, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said players have to be careful about placing their hands on an opponent when the referee is watching.

As shown on Sky Sports (9 April), Morelos, 26, thought he had opened the scoring at Parkhead after tapping the ball past Joe Hart and into the back of the net.

But the striker’s celebrations were cut short after Kevin Clancy adjudged Morelos to have fouled Hoops defender Alistair Johnston in the buildup.

VAR official Nick Walsh did not overturn the decision and the goal was not allowed to stand.

Celtic went on to win the game 3-2 providing a further blow to Rangers’ hopes of an epic comeback in the title race.

The Light Blues contacted the Scottish Football Association to seek clarity on the decision but they reaffirmed the decision of the officials on the day.

McAvennie suggested that the goal should have stood.

I’ve looked at this again, it was very soft,” he told Football Insider.

The two of them were pulling each other’s shirt. I have not got a problem saying that it was probably a goal.

But, in today’s game you have to be careful if you lift your hands and shove anyone.

Johnston went down and that was all the referee saw.

I do not think it would have made much difference if it had been a goal, I think Celtic would have stepped up. They did not play well at all and still got the results.
