Celtic idol issues emphatic Callum McGregor verdict as footage analysed

Frank McAvennie has claimed Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor “took one for the team” against Motherwell on Saturday (1 October).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said it will not do McGregor “any harm” to miss a few games.

As shown on Sportscene (1 October), the 29-year-old hauled back Motherwell’s Ross Tierney who looked to be through on goal.

Referee John Beaton showed the Celts’ captain a straight red card and they saw out the 2-1 win with 10 men.

McAvennie insisted the Scotland international did what had to be done to secure the three points.

Listen the boy was through on goal,” he told Football Insider.

Whether [Stephen] Welsh could have got there or not. It was a sending off there was no two ways about it. He took one for the team, that’s what the boys will be saying. He did the captain’s job.

Celtic

Nobody wants to get sent off, but they could’ve scored and we got a win. I don’t think it will do Callum any harm missing a couple of games. He’s played so much football. He’s playing constantly for Scotland and constantly for Celtic. He won’t want to miss a a game.

When he got the eye injury and was out for a few weeks, he was a revelation when he came back. It won’t do him any harm and they’ve got cover in there. They’ve got more than enough capability in midfield to cover him for a couple of games or whatever it is he gets.
