Celtic in hunt to sign PL defender who still has 38-goal striker in his back pocket - report

Celtic have joined a host of English clubs in the hunt to sign West Brom defender Craig Dawson, according to a report.

The Mirror claimed in their live transfer blog on Sunday [08:12am] that Dawson, 28, is also wanted by Wolves, West Ham and Burnley with the Baggies looking as though they could be relegated to the Championship within the next week.

It is understood that the former England Under-21 international is valued at £15million after he managed to keep elite Tottenham striker Harry Kane in his back pocket on Saturday as West Brom beat Spurs 1-0 at The Hawthorns to keep alive their faint hopes of Premier League survival.

Kane has been in stunning form this season by scoring 38 goals in all competitions, but he was not able to get anything against Dawson and the Baggies back-four on Saturday.

Football Insider verdict

Dawson would instantly become the best defender in Scotland if Brendan Rodgers was able to sign him this summer, but for £15million, Celtic do not have a hope in hell. There’s no way that the Bhoys will spend more than double their current transfer record on a defender. It is definitely the area of the squad that Rodgers should be looking to strengthen, but he should really look elsewhere because Dawson will surely stay in the Premier League for next season – whether it be if West Brom pull off a great escape or another side signs him. The defender has been in great form as of late after he was shifted into a centre-back role. The 28-year-old has spent a lot of the season playing at right-back, however he has proved that he is much better-suited in the middle of the back-line having kept quiet the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Kane in recent weeks.
