Celtic: Kasper Schmeichel’s career is ‘finished’ after ‘weird’ injury announcement

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has played his last game for the club after announcing the severity of his shoulder injury.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Schmeichel took the wrong approach announcing the news himself.

Schmeichel confirmed that he could face up to a year on the sidelines, and that he needed shoulder surgery, live on TV.

The 39-year-old is out of contract at Celtic Park this summer, and has been under increasing scrutiny for his performances in-between the sticks.

Schmeichel joins a long injury list at Celtic, with Viljami Sinisalo having replaced the Dane in goal, and a new number one could be signed in the summer transfer window.

‘Sad end’ to Kasper Schmeichel’s Celtic spell

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Schmeichel will not be remembered fondly at Celtic.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Celtic should have announced Schmeichel’s injury.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s a difficult one but the weirdest thing to me was that he hadn’t told the club, and he’d announced it on TV.

“That was a very weird twist to the whole thing. It seems to me that that’s his last game, I think, for Celtic. I think that’s it, he’s finished, and I think he’ll be gone. So that’s it.

“Will his days be remembered that fondly? Probably not in Celtic terms and I think the ending is a bit of a shame. I think it would have been better for the club to have announced it and then given him the send-off that the club would have wanted.

“I think the fans have been okay with him, but I think for it to end like this is a bit of a disappointment, and certainly in terms of communication it could have been done better. So, a sad end to his Celtic tenure, but there we go, you know, football players and the football soap opera.”

Celtic handed summer transfer boost

Sources have told Football Insider that Bournemouth are happy to sell Julian Araujo in the summer transfer window.

Araujo has become a fan favourite on loan at Celtic, and there is willingness from both sides to agree a permanent deal.

That could mean a departure for either Alistair Johnston or Anthony Ralston in the summer in order to make way for Araujo’s arrival.
