Celtic land extra £14m after star man agrees exit – ‘this is big news’

Celtic have received yet another top-up to their already healthy bank account after confirmation of a player sale.

On Friday (11 July) it was announced that Nicolas Kuhn would be joining Italian side Como, for a fee of around £17million.

The winger’s exit comes just 18 months after the Hoops spent just £3m to prise him away from Rapid Vienna.

Last season, the 25-year-old scored ten goals and picked up 8 assists in the Scottish Premiership, and his impressive form meant he has earned the Glasgow giants a profit of £14m.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that it is a great piece of business from Celtic.

‘Kuhn exit is fantastic for Celtic’

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Celtic have done well to sell Kuhn, despite the fact he was one of their best players last season, as they have a track record of replacing these types of departing stars.

The Hoops finished 17 points clear of their Glasgow rivals Rangers in 2024/25, and are aiming to win their fifth SPL title in a row next season.

Wyness added that Celtic have received another boost to their already healthy bank balance ahead of the upcoming campaign.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think they bought him for about £3m and they’ve sold him now at what’s going to be close to £16-17million, whatever the structure of the deal is in terms of bonuses and add-ons.

“Look, it’s fantastic for Celtic, a great bit of business, a quality player, a good German footballer, and I think he’ll do well at Como.

“Como, of course, are an up-and-coming story that’s been interesting to see, and for them, shopping and taking a player off Celtic is big news.

“For Celtic, it’s very good business and it’s the sort of position that they have done very well in filling continually year after year when they’ve sold players on.

“From both parties, it makes sense, but it’s another top-up for that lovely Celtic bank account that still hasn’t been spent. So we’ll see where that ends up.”

‘Celtic work on signing striker duo’

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed that Celtic will look to provide Brendan Rodgers with at least two new strikers this summer amid interest in Giuseppe Ambrosino.

Ambrosino is one of several strikers on Celtic’s transfer longlist this summer, but Football Insider revealed on 11 July that Rodgers is only likely to sanction a loan move for the unproven Napoli youngster.

Adam Idah is the only out-and-out striker in Rodgers’ squad after the January exit of Kyogo Furuhashi to Rennes, and Daizen Maeda was tasked with filling in as a number nine for the second half of last season.

However, sources have told Football Insider that even if Celtic do sign Ambrosino this summer, Rodgers still wants to bring in a “big-name striker” with a strong track record to make up for Furuhashi‘s absence.
