James Forrest has been one of Celtic’s best players this season, scoring 16 goals and playing at a level unmatched previously in his career.
However, in the recent 3-2 win over Rangers he once again failed to deliver in an Old Firm game, and with Patrick Roberts once again fit Forrest could well lose his place in the team for next month’s Old Firm double header if his form doesn’t pick up.
In a way it would be harsh for the 26-year-old to lose his place in the first team, as he has been in such good form this season and has been a mainstay of the side with 48 appearances, but football isn’t about sentiment, as Forrest grabbed his chance in the first team because of Roberts’ injury issues this season.
Brendan Rodgers will be more than aware of what Forrest brings to the Hoops side, but he will also be aware that in all his years with the Hoops, Forrest has never played well against Rangers, whilst Roberts terrorised the Ibrox side towards the end of last season.
It might just be that the occasion gets to Forrest and it is something he finds difficult to handle, which is odd when you consider how well he played at times for the Hoops in the Champions League group stages this season.
Whatever the reason, Forrest just can’t seem to get going against Rangers, but a good performance against Motherwell on Sunday will go a long way to retaining the manager’s faith in the player. If Forrest fails to deliver once again, Roberts will be waiting in the wings.
In other Celtic news, the Hoops are hoping to agree a new contract with Kristoffer Ajer
