Celtic make contact for Armando Gonzalez transfer, this is when deal can be done

Celtic have already begun to make enquiries into signing Mexican striker Armando Gonzalez in the summer.

According to ESPN, relayed by Fox Sports, Martin O’Neill’s side have already contacted the entourage of the Chivas frontman, alongside the duo of Barcelona and West Ham.

All three interested parties have begun to explore the wage demands of the 22-year-old, but none have made contact with Chivas about the possibility of a deal at the moment.

Gonzalez has hit 17 goals from just 25 league games so far in 2025-26, and that looks set to have put a big move to Europe on the cards for him in the summer.

This is when Celtic will be able to strike Armando Gonzalez deal

Gonzalez’s performances in 2025-26 have quickly cemented him as one of Liga MX’s brightest young talents, and that has already attracted prying eyes from over in Europe.

Barcelona are understood to view the striker as a promising talent who could provide cover for Robert Lewandowski, although they are also said to have Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez on their radar for that role.

Celtic are firmly in the race to add Gonzalez to their own list of attacking options, but they will have to show patience if they truly want to get a deal done for him.

The starlet made his senior debut for the Mexican national team in 2025, and it is expected that he will be in contention to feature as part of their squad for the World Cup this summer.

Fox’s reports have suggested that any move for Gonzalez this summer will likely have to wait until after the tournament, as a result, but that has done little to prevent Celtic from making their interest known.

Why Julian Araujo could hold the key to Gonzalez choosing Celtic

Gonzalez looks set to have plenty of options on the table if he does decide that he is ready to take on Europe next season, but Celtic may yet have a crucial edge that they can lean on.

Julian Araujo has made an impressive start since arriving on loan from Bournemouth in January, and there is already talk of a potential permanent deal being struck in the summer.

Araujo will be familiar with Gonzalez through the Mexico national setup, and O’Neill and the transfer chiefs at Celtic Park will surely be in his ear to try and tempt his countryman into making the move.

The Bhoys will need to box cleverly if they are to win the race amid interest from the Premier League and La Liga, but the prospect of Araujo being able to act as a familiar face could prove crucial.

That will all change if he is not in Celtic colours next season, but if he is, then he could be a key weapon to help try and land Gonzalez.
