Celtic must join reported race to sign top-flight playmaker, will be available in weeks
COMMENT
Celtic must join the reported race to sign Hamilton playmaker Lewis Ferguson in the summer transfer window as the midfielder is set to leave the SuperSeal Stadium when his contract ends in a matter of weeks.
The Scottish Sun has reported that both Aberdeen and Premier League club Crystal Palace are in the hunt to sign Ferguson, 18, in the coming weeks.
It is understood that Palace Sporting Director Dougie Freedman has contacted Hamilton about their assist king, who has been in stunning form in Scotland’s top-flight this season since breaking into the first-team.
Ferguson, son of ex-Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson, has made 14 appearances in all competitions for the Accies and has supplied an impressive five assists in the process despite only making his senior debut this season.
He has been influential against the likes of Rangers, Partick and Ross County and could play a major role in helping his side avoid relegation from the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic could probably do with one or two young central midfielders in the summer as the likes of Tom Rogic and Stuart Armstrong are being linked with moves away from Parkhead as their contracts enter the final year and there’s always the need for a long-term successor to Scott Brown.
Ferguson would cost a minimal compensation fee and Celtic, if they want to continue their major dominance in Scotland, should look to stop the second-best team in Aberdeen from picking him up.
Crystal Palace’s effort to sign the midfielder is also interesting, which suggests that Ferguson may have Premier League potential in the future.
That’s something that Brendan Rodgers should ensure he doesn’t miss out on and he must go in for the 19-year-old as soon as he can.
