Celtic must sell Bain and sign a goalkeeper like Rangers 'great' McGregor - pundit

Frank McAvennie claims any new Celtic manager will look to move on Scott Bain this summer.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, criticised the keeper for his failure to stop Alfredo Morelos’ strike last weekend.

Morelos smashed the ball into the roof of the net during the first half of the Old Firm loss as Bain was only able to watch it fly over his head.

Bain, 29, has been John Kennedy’s goalkeeper of choice and hasn’t missed a minute of league football since Neil Lennon’s last Celtic win.

That was against Hamilton at the end of January and Bain hasn’t been dropped since with Vasilios Barkas relegated to the bench.

However, McAvennie has not been impressed by Bain and tipped him to be replaced by any incumbent Celtic manager this summer.

“Bain should have saved it [Morelos’ goal],” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“People said that it was harsh because [Kristoffer] Ajer was blocking his view but it was two inches from his hand. It was sloppy.

“Great keepers save games, [Allan] McGregor made some great saves at the other end. We need someone like that.

“He made a wonderful save from [Mohamed] Elyounoussi. That was the kind of save that [Fraser] Forster used to make for us.

“We’ve not had a great keeper for a while. I think a new manager would want a new keeper this summer.”

Bain joined Celtic on a permanent basis in the summer of 2018 after a successful loan spell from Dundee FC.

He has won six major honours during his time at Parkhead.
