Celtic news: Glasgow pundit can’t believe VAR as Greg Taylor footage re-analysed

Alan Hutton can’t understand the time delay between Greg Taylor’s handball for Celtic and St Mirren’s penalty award on Sunday (5 March).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender insisted VAR decisions need to be “sharper” but said that will come with time.

As shown on Sky Sports (5 March) Taylor appears to handle the ball inside the Hoops box inside the opening five minutes of the match.

Although referee David Dickinson has a clear view of the incident initially waved play on, after a delay he was instructed by VAR official Andrew Dallas to consult the pitchside monitor.

Dickinson then awarded a spot kick to the Buddies which was scored by Mark O’Hara to put the home side 1-0 in front.

Although the Saints remained in front from the first half, the Hoops came out firing in the second half and went on to a 5-1 victory to maintain their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Hutton didn’t see the need for such a lengthy delay to award a penalty to St Mirren.

I do not understand why,” he told Football Insider.

For me it was pretty straightforward when I saw it. When I saw a replay I knew it was going to be a penalty and I think the referee can make that decision on the pitch.

For whatever reason he made a mistake and he will own up to that, go and look at the monitor.

But it is the time delay, everything has to be sharper. I think it will get better in time but they really need to get going with it.
