Celtic news: McAvennie delivers emphatic verdict on Livingston ‘banner’
Celtic have “rightly” been “written off” for a title win this season after their poor form.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie did not back his former side to clinch the title, but admitted that their two remaining clashes against Rangers could turn the tide in their favour.
Despite sitting at the top of the league, fans have been frustrated by subpar performances and devastating results, including their 2-0 defeat to Hearts in March and 1-1 draws to Aberdeen and Kilmarnock in February.
The resurgent Gers under Philippe Clement are favoured by many to reclaim the league title, while travelling Hoops fans at their recent 3-0 win against Livingston on Sunday (31 March) urged the club to keep going by brandishing a banner that read ‘Don’t give up the dream’.
Celtic expert backs Rangers to win league title
McAvennie encouraged the squad and Brendan Rodgers to “make their own history” by changing their fortunes but remained unconvinced that they would win their 12th title in the last 13 seasons.
“I think the banner [at Livingston] was just telling the players to win the league,” he told Football Insider.
“Celtic have been written off big time, and quite rightly so with some of their performances.
“Rangers were written off for years.
“Celtic is built on fairytales and you make your own bit of history.
“When I played, Billy McNeil was the manager and he would always say to make your own piece of history.
“That’s what this team have to do now.

“They’ve been written off by the press and part of the support.
“I think it will come down to these two games [against Rangers].”
