Celtic news: McAvennie ‘gutted’ by medical expert’s update on Turnbull injury

Frank McAvennie is “gutted” for Celtic star David Turnbull after it was revealed he could spend the next two months on the sidelines.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the blow was “such a shame” for the midfielder.

Turnbull, 22, was forced to withdraw just 25 minutes into Celtic’s 2-1 League Cup final win over Hibernian on Sunday (19 December).

As quoted by the Daily Record post-match, Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou claimed the midfielder “suffered from the number of games we are playing at the moment.”

Football Insider injury expert Ben Dinnery suggested Turnbull could be sidelined for up to “eight weeks”.

McAvennie claims Turnbull will benefit from some time away from football.

“Well, you have the break don’t you, so that’s a positive,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Even after that, he’s missing a month of football which is no good to anyone.

“That’s such a shame because he was doing really well. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the boy.

“I think the one place Celtic can afford to lose players is in the centre of midfield.

“We have a lot of capable players there. I would be more concerned if it was another area of the pitch.

“I’m just gutted for Turnbull. Every time it looks like he’s having a good run in the side, he breaks down.

“I think a bit of time away from football will be good for him if anything.”
